Bipolar disorder is manageable. With the right treatment, most people build stable, full lives
Bipolar is exhausting in a way that’s hard to explain to anyone who hasn’t lived it. The up-swings can feel amazing at first — fast, confident, unstoppable — right up until the spending, the sleepless nights, the burned bridges, or the crash on the other side. Then the lows drop you somewhere heavy and hopeless. And in between, you’re bracing, never quite sure which version of you is going to show up.
Here’s the honest truth we lead with: bipolar disorder is a lifelong neurobiological condition. It’s managed, not cured — but “managed” can mean stable, steady, and genuinely good. It takes two things working together: medication with a psychiatrist, and real therapy. We do the therapy half, in close coordination with your prescriber.
One thing up front, because people ask: you don’t need to have a drug or alcohol problem to come here. Awkward Recovery treats bipolar on its own. And because about half of people with bipolar also struggle with substances at some point, if that’s part of your picture, we treat both together.
In crisis right now?
If you’re in an active manic or mixed episode, seeing or hearing things that aren’t there, or having thoughts of suicide with a plan or intent, that’s a medical emergency — go to your nearest ER or call/text 988 (Suicide & Crisis Lifeline) now. You can also text HOME to 741741. Awkward Recovery admissions: (512) 616-0809.
A Straight Word About Medication.
We need to say this clearly, up front, because you deserve the truth over a sales pitch: for bipolar disorder, medication isn’t optional. Mood stabilizers (and sometimes more) are the standard of care for bipolar I and bipolar II, and the clinical evidence does not support treating them with therapy alone. If you’re hoping to manage bipolar without medication, we’ll tell you honestly at intake that the evidence isn’t there — not to dismiss you, but because you deserve to know what works.
Awkward Recovery does not prescribe. We coordinate closely with prescribing psychiatrists — yours or one in our referral network. Our therapy strengthens medication adherence, teaches you to catch mood episodes early, and gives you the day-to-day skills to live well. It works with your medication; it doesn’t replace it.

Bipolar Isn’t One Thing.
- Bipolar I — full manic episodes, often alternating with major depression. Needs consistent mood-stabilizer treatment; therapy supports it and helps repair the fallout.
- Bipolar II — hypomania (a milder high that can feel like “finally doing great”) alternating with major depression. Often misread as plain depression for years.
- Cyclothymia — a chronic, lower-grade churn of ups and downs that never quite settles.
- Bipolar + substance use — one of the highest-risk combinations, because substances both trigger episodes and offer short-term escape from them. We treat both at once.
Knowledge Nugget: Bipolar II gets missed for years because nobody seeks help during hypomania — it feels good. People come in for the depression, get treated for depression alone, and stay stuck. Getting the diagnosis right changes everything about treatment.

Bipolar Treatment FAQ.
We’ll be straight with you: the clinical evidence does not support therapy-only treatment for bipolar I or II. Therapy helps a great deal, but without mood stabilizers the risk of recurrence and severe episodes is significantly higher. Medication with a psychiatrist is the foundation; our therapy is the structure built on it. If you don’t have a prescriber yet, that’s not a reason to wait — reach out and start the program, and we’ll connect you with a provider who can handle the medication side.
No — we’re a therapy-focused program. Medication is handled by your prescribing psychiatrist, yours or one in our referral network, and we coordinate closely with them.
No. Our masters-level therapists can work toward a diagnosis through clinical evaluation and ongoing observation, in coordination with your psychiatrist to confirm and refine it. If you haven’t been evaluated yet, intake maps how to get there.
That’s one of the most common challenges in bipolar — and it’s part of the disorder, not a character flaw. Skills work targets it directly, so “I feel better, I don’t need the meds” stops running the show.
Yes. About half of people with bipolar also develop a substance use problem, and we treat both at the same time inside the IOP rather than making you choose which to work on.
Yes — it’s lifelong. But “always have it” doesn’t mean “always struggle with it.” With medication, therapy, and structure, most adults with bipolar live stable, full lives. Treatment changes the trajectory.
Most major plans cover IOP-level care for bipolar as a behavioral-health benefit, and we’re in-network with major carriers. Coverage varies by plan, so we verify your exact benefits for free. Start a free benefits check.
